How can I focus my camera in complete darkness?

I wanted to do a long exposure photo of the stars but my camera (canon rebel t1i) wouldn't focus so all of the photos ended up looking like bokeh(blurry circles) , not stars... can someone please help?

Taking photographs at night is amazing, but its definitely a challenge. I'm not sure how much experience you have with photography so don't be offended if I say things you already know!

In order to take photographs at night you absolutely need to use a tripod or your photographs will either be completely black or wayy to blurry. I'm not sure if you are already using a tripod, but that is definitely my first recommendation.

Once you've got the camera on a tripod, like everyone else said, focus your lens to infinity (basically just turn the lens all the way in the direction that looks the most in focus).

Then, you need to slow your shutter speed way down so that more light can enter your camera when you press the button. Turn the dial on the top of the camera to "Av" rather than Auto or Night Shot. Next, hold down the button on the back of the camera that says "Av". While holding this button turn the dial near the button you press to take pictures until it says something like "4" or maybe even lower on the screen of your camera. This means that your shutter will open for 1/4th of a second which is very very slow, and it will let in enough light to capture the light on a dark night. Mess around with the shutter speed until you get a photograph that you are happy with.
