Canon PIXMA iP4850 Ink Review

It's testament to just how first-rate Canon's inkjets happen to be that so very little development regularly helps to keep them near the top of the tree. The Pixma iP4850 is physically exactly the same to the preceding Pixma iP4700, equipped with precisely the same low profile and sleek finish, and moreover when it comes to printing there are actually purely modest modifications beneath the cover.

The five-colour ink system is still in position, having both pigmented and dye-based blacks to make certain text as well as images both see the benefit. Virtually any difference in print caliber is hence just about imperceptible, with precisely the same perfect colour tones together with razor-sharp depth in pictures and diagrams. Text is strong as well as blemish-free, additionally, the iP4850 prints two-sided not to mention directly on to optical discs using the supplied tray.

The sole immediately evident improvement is actually in document speed. The predecessor's measured rates of 8.8ppm in mono and 5.8ppm in colour have been increased a little bit, to 10.5ppm and 6.1ppm respectively. Apart from that it's more of the same, with a top-quality 6 x 4in print still taking 46 seconds and our A4 photomontage falling into the tray in 1min 38secs.

Curiously, where Canon has tried to break brand new ground is within the included software and tools. The Canon iP4850 ink cartridges are the new PGI-525 and CLI-526 inks, however the advantage isn't in more capacity; rather the tanks are chipped, and owners employing a complete set of bona fide Canon inks will discover they have exclusive access to Creative Park Premium - an expansion of Canon's current art and creativity website.

It's full of "photos and illustrations from world-renowned artists", which includes the likes of Norman Rockwell and Beatrix Potter. The photographs are yours to make use of openly, additionally, the site permits you to change them to a variety of cards, calendars along with other creations. It's not must-have stuff, but it's a nice extra.

If that does not excite, one other brand new element is the Full HD Movie Print function. In case you have a Canon EOS or PowerShot camera capable of recording HD video, this particular function grabs a still from any individual scene, enhances it and even prints it as a high-quality photograph. Scarcely a core attribute, and it's really a shame that far more video forms aren't supported, yet we can easily see the charm.

But that's it. Identical USB interface as well as PictBridge port, exact same two paper trays plus exact same above-average running costs. There is honestly nothing in the least here to coax users of the iP4700 to upgrade, however, you have the feeling Canon understands simply too well just how great its printers presently are.

With the Pixma it's a clear case of not playing with a profitable formula: it is still the fastest all-round inkjet in the marketplace and none can match the quality of the prints. Therefore while not doing a great deal new or exciting the iP4850 steals onto the A List - for home printing there is hardly any competition.

Quality and usability of Canon ink refills by independent refiller?

Generally speaking, what is the feeling / advisability / research / results re: using refilled colored ink cartridges (series CLI-221) (by an independent shop; NOT myself) in a Canon MX860 printer? BQ: Does anyone know how many times a cartridge can be refilled, and how does the refiller keep track? (Like a mark on the case??)

I have a Canon that uses those same inks and I refill all the time.

There are no limits to the amount of times you can refill with the tanks as unlike the the old cartridges they have no print head built in that will deteriorate with each use.

The person above has posted a link to what he classes as cheap ink and don't fill your cartridges it destroys the printer.

1 Refill does not destroy the printer
2 It does save money as I refill my tanks for 20p (40cents) each time. Since when am I not saving money?
3 Those inks he's trying to sell are either from his own or a friend's site and much dearer than the price you can buy them on Ebay for as the link below shows you!

You can take those empties back and get the same store credit that his get - that is the form the money back he talks of comes in, store credit at Staples not credit on that site he put!

It means you don't get ink for $2 from his site it means that you get credit for the empties returned towards full price ink in the store and those inks on his site will still cost you $5 each. He is misleading you and others.
