How do I legally drive a car home after I bought it?

I'm in New York State and I will be driving a car from 3 hours away in PA back to my home here in NY. I probably wont be putting the car on the road since winter will be here very shortly but I will be buying the car and garaging it. I know that the owner will need to sign over the title and fill out a receipt for the sale but how would I drive the vehicle home without registering it and getting plates for it? Again... I don't want to register the vehicle since I will not be putting it on the road.

You would need to insure the vehicle in order to get a trip permit from PA. You could contact someone with a pickup & rent a car trailer and bring it home. You could hire a tow truck to do it for you. While that is expensive it pales in comparison to the cost driving the vehicle with an expired registration, ticket and the vehicle being towed & stored.
