What Does the Color Red Mean for Your Room?

Colors make you feel a particular way when you associate them with certain actions. The color red is a very emotional and sometimes aggressive shade. It's the color of fire and blood so it is associated with war and danger in addition to passion, desire and love. Red enhances metabolism and can alert our senses. That's why it's the color used for stop signs and stop lights. It stimulates us and allows us to make quick decisions.

However, because of the impulsive nature of the color, it's one that needs to be used sparingly. You don't want you or your guests to feel overstimulated. Red can make us feel romantic but it also has the potential to cloud our judgment. For this reason, you should not paint a room entirely red. It is simply too overwhelming. It's a color best used as an accent or paired with another color in equal parts. Pure reds are best used for accent walls in a room. If red is your favorite color this allows you to use it without burning your retinas every time you enter a room.

If you're dead set on using a lot of red, try mixing it with less intrusive colors like blues and grays. By combining an aggressive color like red with a passive, cool color like blue, they balance each other.

You'll also want to avoid using red in rooms where you spend a lot. Places like the bedroom or the living room are best suited for cooler, more relaxing colors.Being surrounded by an intense color like red can begin to affect your mood after awhile. You will also want to avoid using it in rooms where you might have heavy discussions like, again, the living room or even the dining room. These are places in the home where you'll want to keep your head. Remember that red is capable of affecting your judgment.

Reds are at their best when used in rooms like the kitchen, pantry or a formal sitting room. Because you don't spend a lot of time here, you'll be able to enjoy the room without letting it take over. Also, because red is a stimulating color it will increase your appetite. Blue is actually known to suppress the appetite so you won't want to pair red in a kitchen with blue. Try a lighter orange or cream color.
