The Recipe For The Perfect Energy Drink

Energy drinks are a booming market, with little 3 ounce bottles of "five hour energy' potions vanishing off the shelves of convenience stores in increasing amounts.  Given the market success of various versions of these products, it only makes sense that someone would try to MLMify them.

Now, the key to any MLM prospect is the pitch; you have to promise something that the competition doesn't have, something that's not available in stores.  What Yoli is doing is making the pitch that the vitamins that give the energy boost aren't 'fresh' because of how they're stored.  The argument is that vitamin solutions break down because they're pasteurized and stored in water, where the compounds will slowly degrade.  

The numbers they cite are that energy drinks lose 80% or more of their effectiveness after sitting in the bottle for 30 days, and the dose given on the label is what was there when the product was manufactured, not what it may be after it's been stored in a warehouse and shipped to your store.

Their solution is Yoli Blast caps, which are freeze dried concentrates of the various compounds needed for an energy drink that screw onto a bottle and are shaken, allowing mixing right before the drink is consumed, and promising greater doses.   It's a decent pitch.  The resulting energy drinks are quite tasty, and seem to be more effective than the store bought ones, though that's hard to definitively measure, since 'energy' from an energy drink is very much a subjective experience.

Yoli's other health claim on the product is that their blast caps have live enzymes that help nutrient uptake, and have boosted anti-oxidants in their mix, as well as some probiotic compounds.  They also use a natural sugar blend that's less likely to trigger problems for diabetes, and they're comparatively low sugar.  (Compare this to Gatorade and its knockoffs, which have more sugar per fluid ounce than soda does.)

Touching on a health idea from a few years ago, Yoli blast caps also contain a formula that helps reduce the pH of the body's natural systems, which is meant to counteract the oxidizing effects of most processed foods.  There are health gurus that claim that making the human body a bit more alkali will solve every problem from rheumatoid arthritis to athletes foot to post-partum depression, and Yoli is capitalizing on that information.

About the only thing that Yoli doesn't promise out of their blast caps is a colon cleansing regimen, or that it will help you lose weight or be an appetizer suppression.  Which is fine; the usual rule of thumb is that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

The primary pitch for Yoli is freshness and convenience, and there's a certain novelty value involved in screwing a blast cap onto a bottle of water, shaking it and seeing the contents diffuse through the bottle.  No doubt, the people who buy heavily into Yoli and make it a lifestyle choice will be solid adherents, and will do their part to spread the word.

Can someone recommend a diffuser for a external flash?

I have a Nikon SB-600 and I am looking for a reasonably priced soft box or some type of diffuser for my flash. I am taking some shots at a restaurant in a few weeks that does not have low ceilings to bounce the flash around. I have been looking on B&H Photo, and can someone tell me if those plastic caps are worth the money? I want to find a diffuser that if I aim the light at them it wont be as harsh or they come out as washed out.

You have, I guess, 4 portable alternatives: -

1. White linen handkerchief or napkin which you probably have at home - cost zero - likely to still have some hard spots, so double it up

2. Stofen (or similar) diffuser which fits right on the flash head. I use this with a Canon flash and it is OK. There are also gold versions if you want a warmer light

3. Gary Fong system - rather expensive I feel, but good, and lots of options - google this

4. Several velcro attached diffisers, or ones you blow up like a balloon. Attached is an ebay link. Ebay is worth a look as there are many...many options from $5 upwards

Less portable option: -

Strobist approach, with a white umbrella, see strobist.com, but this is an off-camera system, and needs enough space.
