Dell Studio 15 Laptop Detail Reviews

Dell has made good use of the main chassis for its Studio series laptops.this 15in-screen Studio 15 - now sporting a brand-new Intel Core i5 dual-core processor.Dell's Studio range of laptops is aimed at the regular home user, with the Studio 15 offering a great mix of affordable portability and power.

The specs of this particular Studio 15, are as follows:

The 15.4-inch screen is superb, with LED backlighting used to offer the most accurate colour reproduction currently possible. The resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels is among the sharpest we have seen, and creates the crispest image quality. Reflections show up in brighter conditions however, as with other Super-TFT panels.

Graphics are handled by an integrated Intel graphics chip, which is the same GPU used in many of the Studio's rivals. It gives this machine moderate 3D capabilities, and we had no trouble running presentations or watching DVDs, and photo editing was also carried out with ease. You won't be able to play anything more than the simplest of games, however.

We were also impressed by the Dell Studio 15's keyboard and trackpad. While the keyboard may be a touch clankier in action than our memory of the Studio XPS recalls, it was still comfortable in use. The touchpad meanwhile was incredible silky and responsive, a little small but one of the best at any price, when so many manufacturers cut corners by fitting cheaper low-grade devices here.

The two mouse-click buttons are slightly recessed but are nevertheless easier to use than the long-travel buttons we remember of the Studio XPS 13. There's even a ￡30 option to fit an Apple-style white-LED backlit keyboard.

Dell pre-installs its Dell latitude d820 battery pack Dock (courtesy of developer Stardock) at the top of the Windows 7 desktop. We wonder if this cheeky clone is a tacit hint to Microsoft from Dell that Windows 7 didn't go quite far enough in copying Mac OS X's interface.

Screen quality was better than average, a glossy widescreen panel of 1366x768 resolution, with crisp definition. Given the high build quality and great trackpad we were nearly inclined to overlook the usual eye-strain posed by this glaring reflective screen.

Our final model of the quite came with an Intel Core i5-520M CPU running at 2.4GHz. Intel's built-in Turboboost feature soups this up to 2.93GHz when conditions allow.

But it's easy enough to configure as your taste and budget allows, up to a Core i7-820QM apparently. Other options include Bluetooth for another ￡30, or a full-HD widescreen panel, and wireless-n networking.

And if you feel like sprucing up more than the internal components, Dell also offers dozens of colourful patterns to customise the lid back.

The Core i5-equipped Studio 15 proved a very quick machine, logging a sterling score of 103 points in our WorldBench 6 speed test. For context, that's quicker than this month's Best Buy in the ￡500 Top 5 Charts. We did notice the Core i5 version seemed to run a little hotter, with the fan kicking in more frequently.

Battery for Dell Studio 15 suffered a little from the new chip. Our first dual-core sample stretched to 260 mins in the MobileMark 2007 Productivity test. With a Core i5 onboard, this figure dropped to 225 mins - or 3hrs 45mins. A 9-cell battery is an option which ought to break the five-hour barrier.

At the end of the day the Studio 15 is a solid offering in the 15-inch consumer notebook category. The build quality, range of customizable options, expandability, style, and price make this an excellent choice if you're in the market for a 15-inch notebook. Still, we would have liked to see more graphics card options than just the integrated Intel X3100 and dedicated ATI Radeon HD 3450.

Issues like lack of VGA cable screw posts, dedicated docking station connector, or lack of a simple RAM expansion cover are minor, and many experienced users may find the all-in-one access panel on the bottom of the notebook to be extremely helpful. The pre-configured model we tested suffered from weak integrated graphics that ruined an otherwise enjoyable experience, but configurations with dedicated graphics are available from Dell.com.

That said, we are a little upset over the delayed shipping of our original order from Dell.com and if other customers can expect a delay of a month or more then some back-to-school shoppers will be disappointed this year. Hopefully Dell can resolve these shipping delays.

Bottom line, if you're in the market for a 15-inch desktop replacement notebook with nice multi-media options then the Dell Studio 15 deserves serious consideration. Although the budget configuration we reviewed is far from being a multi-media powerhouse, it still makes an excellent laptop for average use.

Where can I better learn how to use recording studio equipment?

I've been using garageband for a while, but after my Mac broke down and I was stuck with Fruity Loops, I'm having trouble getting used to it.
I'm also trying to learn how to use Pro Tools.

I would suggest going on a forum for the specific program your using and getting some tips from them....
