I'm looking to buy a few softboxes. What do I need to look for when buying one?
I plan on mainly focusing on portrait and fashion photography.
What kind of softbox should I look for
I have a nikon D40.
(I would like one with lights included, because I have no lights whatsoever lol)
If you think umbrellas would be better for portrait/fashion then let me know =]
You will need to decide on what kind of lighting pattern you want to work with in order to decide between soft boxes and umbrellas. Umbrellas are a much more direct light source and provide a harder (brighter highlights, darker shadows) light to your picture. Soft boxes are just as their name says, they are a soft lighting source (highlights are not as bright and shadows are not as dark). In the painting (Art) world the difference would be similar to painting with a sable hair brush or a stiff bristle brush.
There are a variety of manufactures that produce lighting equipment and just as many fans of each. Most of the big lighting manufacturers produce their own light modifiers (umbrellas, soft boxes, reflectors, etc.) There are also a number of smaller companies that make just light modifiers. You will have to purchase the lights and then find a company that makes the adapter to fit your lights.
Without droning on further, one thing you might do is search for a professional photography convention (PPA or your state affiliate). Most of these gatherings have a trade show (you might have to pay to get in). This would provide you with a number of the various manufacturers and the ability to "play" with the equipment before purchasing.
